How to clean a resin driveway
- By Will Moran
A resin-bound driveway is a fantastic investment. It’s durable, attractive, and generally low-maintenance. However, like any exterior surface, it needs a little care to keep it looking its best. We are going to show you every step of how to clean a resin driveway
The good news? Cleaning a resin driveway is far easier than cleaning most other surfaces!
Here is your simple, step-by-step guide to keeping your resin driveway sparkling clean and in top condition.
Routine Cleaning: Keeping it Tidy
For day-to-day maintenance and removing light surface debris, simple routine cleaning is all you need.
1. Sweep or Blow Away Debris
What to do: Use a stiff brush or broom to sweep off leaves, dirt, and general garden debris. Alternatively, an electric or petrol leaf blower is an incredibly quick and effective tool for this job.
Why it’s important: If organic matter is left to decompose on the surface, it can encourage moss and algae growth.
2. Hose Down the Surface
What to do: Give the driveway a good rinse with a garden hose periodically. This washes away fine dust and dirt that a brush might miss.
A quick note on rain: A good rainfall is often enough to keep the surface relatively clean, but a manual rinse in dry spells is helpful.
When your driveway needs a deeper clean—perhaps to remove winter grime, oil stains, or stubborn algae—you’ll need to use a bit more power.
1. Apply a Cleaning Solution
What to do: For a general clean, a mild detergent (like dish soap) mixed with warm water is often enough. For green growth (algae, moss), use a specialized patio or driveway cleaner that is safe for resin surfaces.
Application: Apply the solution generously across the affected area using a watering can or a large bucket.
Dwell Time: Let the solution sit for 15-20 minutes to break down the grime.
2. Agitate the Surface
What to do: Use a soft-to-medium bristle brush (a yard brush is ideal) to gently scrub the surface. Focus on areas with visible stains or growth.
Important: Avoid using metal-bristled brushes, harsh scrapers, or anything that could dislodge the aggregate stones.
3. Rinse Thoroughly
What to do: Rinse the entire driveway with a garden hose until all the soapy residue and loosened dirt are completely washed away.
Should I use a pressure washer?
This is the most common question we get! Can you wash with a pressure washer?
The answer is yes, but with strict care:
- Do: Use a wide fan setting (not a focused jet).
- Do: Keep the nozzle a minimum of 20 cm (8 inches) away from the surface.
- Do Not: Use high pressure High pressure can damage the bonding agent and dislodge the aggregate stones.
- Do Not: Point the washer straight down into one spot for too long. Keep the water moving.
If you are unsure, it is always safer to stick to a good brush and hose.
